From Imbolc, Candlemas to Groundhog Day

Here we go again. Groundhog Day like most holidays has pagan roots. It the old days badgers were used as weather prognosticators while celebrating Imbolc, the pagan Celtic holiday marking the midway point between the winter and spring solstices. The goddess of fire, healing, fertility, ┬áBrigid got Christianized as St. Brigid and Candlemas become the purification feast of the Virgin Mary. The only thing we can all agree on is: shadow or no shadow, it’s six weeks to spring. It’s hard to believe with yet another snowstorm swirling around me but it’s true. Time to light another fire?
