America 250: A Unique Zen View of the Semiquincentennial

If you have been with me for a long time, you might remember a special feature on my old blog called Zen Tea Tuesday.
I launched this space all the way back in 2008. Sadly, a digital glitch wiped out six years of my cherished content.
Lately, I have been stepping into the “Wayback Machine” to rescue those lost files. I am resurrecting my old photographs of vintage teacups and peaceful quotes.
Finding this old tea graphic felt like the perfect bridge to today. As fireworks light up the sky for the massive America 250 celebration, I find myself looking back at my own journey while reflecting on the grander story of this nation.

A Beautifully Ironic Vantage Point
I hold citizenship in both Canada and Finland. I have also called America my home for the past 25 years. Living here as an immigrant gives me a unique lens, and today, I am struck by a beautiful piece of irony.
Right now, I am looking at a sculpture of Lady Liberty.
  • It was created by British artists.
  • It sits proudly aboard the Queen Mary 2, a famous British ocean liner I have sailed on multiple times.

There is something entirely fitting about celebrating American independence through a British lens on a British ship.

Except for the Indigenous peoples who first belonged to this sacred land, the American story is entirely built by people from everywhere else. It is a giant tapestry woven from global threads.
Today is not just about a date on a calendar. It is about honoring:
  • The shared global journey that brings people to these shores.
  • The diverse hands that physically built the foundation of this country.
  • The countless unique voices that continue to shape America’s heart every single day.

Like a sparkling sky full of diamonds, America shines brightest when all of its different lights shine together. Happy 4th of July!

⛈️ P.S. From the Rabbit Hole: Just Tacking This On

I’ve been roasting all week in this heat wave and it’s easy to forget all the other heat waves from our past and so I thought I’d dig into the archives and sure enough of course there was another heat wave in early July.

This is from 2010 to 2014. I’ve also included a few comments, obviously as I’m sharing some of the old posts from the way back machine there’s no way I can share all the comments, but I think they do capture the Zeitgeist of the moment. Oh, I miss my early readers!

For every blog post idea, I have dozens that don’t get chosen. Sometimes, I second guess and lament maybe I should have chosen idea #3 or # 23.

Sometimes, a photo pops and the choice is easy. This moody shot from the 4th of July fireworks reminds me of a scene from Dante’s inferno and mirrors how I’m feeling today.

(edit: so many of the original images are gone. I will swap out whenever I have anything appropriate like this one.)

New York is melting under a heat wave and silly me is leaving my leafy suburb to take the train into Grand Central today.

Speaking of infernos, we’re talking a record fire and brimstone steamy, sunny 100 humid degrees today. I will happily melt into a puddle because I’m off to see my guru, Amma the “Hugging Saint” who is in town as part of her world tour. If she can give thousands of sacred hugs all night without food, water or breaks, I think I can endure a little heat. Amma.org

Hot. Yes, here, too. The quote from Buddha is most appropriate. I have been discussing related topics a lot lately, and practicing a lot of meditation techniques to quell my anxiety.Good luck.

A steamy 100 here today as well. Loving it, because I thrive in this kind of weather. In spite of the heat, it sounds like you have an exciting day ahead. And yes: one step actually taken is worth all the ideas in one’s head.

Your guru has an interesting profile, if I might say. The moment I saw the words “The Hugging Saint” I knew she’s a Bhakti yogi. Hope you had a great time. =)

The Boomer Muse: Red, Hot and Blue

Happy 4th of July! Breath free… have a safe and joyous day!

Just back from Manhattan on steamy night and had to share this shot of Chrysler Building decked out in red, white and blue. It doesn’t get more American than this.

Sugar Plum Fairy in June

Lilacs quotes

Self-care is #1 on my to-do list this week. I will need to pull a few rabbits out of hat to pull off all that’s required while juggling new and old projects. Maybe I need a sugar plum fairy godmother?

Can you imagine the scent of lilac? This was taken two weeks ago and in terms of lilac time, it was an eternity. They’re gone but their scent memory lives on. The ones that are laser sealed in my brain are the tiny Sugar Plum. I hadn’t seen this hybrid before, leaned in for a whiff not expecting much from these micro buds and they nearly blew my head off. Sweet, spicy intoxicating heaven. When someone says stop and smell the flowers, these should be the poster children. It’s a good reminder how mind-blowingly big things can be in small packages.

As I transition to the new WordPress format, I may disappear for a couple days so don’t fret. When I have a date, I’ll let you know. Also you can always visit on Facebook or Twitter.

Layla, up here some of the lilacs are still in bloom. Aware they’re all soon be gone I go scouring the neighborhoods every morning to drink in their final, fading scents.

Some of these old links actually work. They might be slow, but if you’re curious, try it.
